I've finished my first try at it. I did it in one pass by doing a Continuous Thread Join around the body, and I managed to finish with the head so that I didn't have to hide the ends. But the results are not what I hoped for - the wings come too close together at the top, squashing the head between them.
Thoughts for the second try: Maybe my chains are too tight, maybe I should let the head float up a bit more. Maybe I should find a way to squeeze the body narrower, or make the wings go alongside it... Also, I wanted to do the head as an SSSR, but because I was running out of thread, I did a split ring. I'll do the SSSR next time.
A few months later:
Trial #2: Decided to start with a chain at the bottom of one wing, go round to the top and do the body and the head, then down the other wing. This worked much better. Where a lock join was required, I lock joined into a paperclip. I am quite pleased with the twisted picots. But the head is still quite squashed!
Trial #3: Decided to eliminate the two chains squashing the head by turning the two rings into split rings. This works pretty well - though there's still not much room for the head...
Trial #4: Tried to ease the rings down by adding joins between the bottom chains and the body. So, the first chain is now 1-12, and the last chain is 12-1, and the body is 4-3-1-3-3-1-4. The bottom chains are indeed closer to the body - but there isn't any more space around the head.
I think Trial #3 (in Lizbeth Summer Fun) turned out the best.
