Yes, @muskaan, I also haven't had luck with the magic thread - it breaks on me. I think maybe it's because my stitches are quite tight around the core. If the magic thread is in the core, it's even tighter in there - no wonder it breaks.
My magic thread also breaks. Or it gets put in backwards. But even when it works, I usually manage to distort whatever element it's in. Sewing under caps is simple, it's easy, and it works every time - for me, you understand. I'm not gonna mess with it.
Grace, how small is your magic thread? If you keep it smaller than your tatting thread, it should not be much trouble, you just have to tat at your normal tension. I use Magic Thread all the time and put a little sewing knot to keep the thread from back-sliding. It's holding my tablecloth together.
The very first time I tried the Magic Thread, it magically broke. I thought it might have just been a defect in the thread and tried again. When it broke the second time, it was clearly not a system to spend much time on, so to end stress and anxiety, I tie knots. They are very satisfying and friendly.
You know, whatever works for you and makes the lace. I love magic thread for me. and as others mentioned, there are a dozen ways to do it!
Rock your own style.
I prefer and use the magic thread. The one time I tried whip stitching I distorted the tatting. I tat tightly and had a great deal of trouble pulling the needle through. I may have to try it again, as well as sewing under the caps.
I change up the method I use depending on a variety of factors. When using a magic thread, I use string designed for making beaded necklaces and jewelry that is a bit smaller than the tatting thread I'm using for the project. I have one size for use with size 20 and one for use with size 40. It is nice and slippery, yet strong. When I first tried magic thread, it either broke or I had to really wrestle and struggle with it to get the loop to pull through. I tried several different materials for the loop including tatting thread and dental floss with no luck. With the jewelry thread, I have been able to reuse the same loops on different projects for months.
