Hi everybody
During our last Tattermeeting an elderly lady showed me a picture of a butterfly she did some time ago, but only one side was correct, the other had a bad mistake in it. So she asked me if I know this pattern, or to look for it.
So, searching this database didn't bring any success, so I tried also pinterest. No success.
As she had the pattern, but cannot find it anymore, it might be also in a book or booklet. Maybe somebody can give me a hint or better, owns this pattern as well. I don't know if it was free.
So on the picture below the left wing is correct, the right one not. Before I start counting the stitches, I wanted to try it here in the forum. Many thanks in advance.
The picture is a picture from the picture, so bad quality, sorry.
Claudia
I don't recognize it, but I like it. I have several butterfly books. Let me look...
Sorry, I can't help with locating this pattern. But it looks like counting stitches and replicating them won't be too big a problem. Does she happen to have any more of this thread? Does she want to fix this one or tat another one?
Tim, thank you very much for looking into your books.
Lynn, the lady would like to make a new one. She did it, as she said, years ago. Yes, stitchcounting won't take too long, but making the design on the computer.... I am still not yet very proficient with the software, as I cannot spend so much time to learn it as I should at the moment. Just working too much, my own tatting is in the same place since begin of september, our last tattermeeting. Next wednesday is our meeting, finding myself somewhere up in the sky again....
Maybe somebody else has an idea, otherwise I try my luck with the software.
Thanks again

The only 'mistake' is the missing large ring on right side.
I can draw the diagram, if someone will count the stitches . If you give the go-ahead, I will draw the butterfly and send it to you, or post here. Then someone can add the numbers. Does that work out okay ?
I am going to count the stitches and try to tat it. Then I will send you the stitch count, and directions. But will take some time, I have to clean up my balcony first (yes, weather is surprisingly good). Will try it late afternoon. Thanks for the offer.
As we still have no idea who is the designer, I think it will be ok to publish it here under anonymous, what do you think?
@muskaan
Here we go, I tatted the butterfly, but would like to have some other people doing it as well. I used size 20 Lizbeth, but think, size 10 would be better....
I started with the lower body (doing back-/frontside tatting).
R: 4-3-4-4-3-4
C: 2 (doing the right wing first as seen on the picture)
R 3-3
C 6
R 4+(to previous ring) 2-3-3
C 7
R 5+(to previous ring) 2+5
C 5-2-2-2-1-5 (picotlength as you prefer for the wing)
R 6+(to first picot of previous ring) 1 + (to second picot already used on R 2 and 3) 3-4
C 7
R 5+ (to previous ring) 3 + (to Ring 3) 1 + (to Ring 2) 8
C 6-6 + (attach to Bodyring) 6 + (to previous picot) 8
R 8 + (to the center thread at the previous join (
C 13 (attach to next free picot at the Bodyring
cut and tie
For the second wing I started at the second picot on the Bodyring left side and worked the pattern "backwards", mirrorlike, meaning:
C 13
R 8-8
C 8 + (to picot on the ring) 6
etc,
After joining the Chain 2 to the top of the Bodyring, I tried to work a SSSR, to close on top, but as there are 5-1-5 to work, only one ds is not going well to have some thread left to make a hanger. So I suggest to make just a normal SSSR to finish, and if wanted, attaching thread afterwards if it should become a hanger.
The butterfly had to be made wet and putting in the final form as the body should be oval, and not round, but it laid flat already before, now it looks nice, without fixing and blocking etc.

Love it ! Will diagram it right away and try to tat one later in the day, to confirm ....
Beautiful colour
Claudia, the skeleton is drawn (no picots, etc. yet).
Reading your instructions, and I think this butterfly can easily be tatted all in one pass. Start with small head ring, RW, make the large body ring as a split ring to climb out into one of the chains of the lower wing. Then it all clockwise or counterclockwise rings and chains and joins.
If one is using 2 colours, then one can start with the ring colour, and join with chain colour After the split ring body is made.
Let me know what you think.
I will tat it in one pass and 2 colours to see how it works.
Hi Muskaan
Yes, I also thought about tatting in one pass, but I just wanted to testtat the numbers first, and didn't do all the thinking where to start and so on. Let me know how it worked, one or two colors....
i just posted on @swissgirl's project asking for the pattern, and here it is!
I would certainly try to do this in one pass, and, if possible, end with the head and antennae so I don't have to hide the ends. I wonder if it would look okay to have a couple of picots on the bottom so I can do a Continuous Thread Join over to the other wing...
Grace, let us know how it worked, and what you changed. I probably would to the head a little bit bigger, but will wait now for the graphic and try it once more. Also to test tat it in a single round.
The first try was to get the numbers, and now we can improve it!
Hi girls , got a bit delayed ...
Here are the drawings :
Claudia's prototype and diagram. In this diagram, there are no instructions and stitch count is strictly what Claudia shared above. Anybody wanting to try it in their own direction/way, is welcome to notate their tweaks and report back.
This diagram shows how I worked it in one pass. Again, feedback is welcome. RW between chains and rings.
I have a few notes on 2-colour version, although I did not complete that since the thread broke.
This working is 2 shuttles, CTM, although, we need only a maximum of 20" for the split ring (hence can be worked with a tail left from SH1). The rest can be worked with one shuttle and ball. The ball can be of another colour and can be joined at the mock picot point.
Looking forward to all versions and will make the tweaks/changes based on feedback.
happy tatting ;-)
Awesome! I really like this butterfly! I'll have to give it a try soon.
@swissgirl I'm a big advocate of using a photo and putting the stitch counts on the print of the photo. Then scan the results and post it. Very low tech, and quite fast IMHO. Also more friendly to international tatters.
A program today from Japan was on improving communications by using icons -- and Japan's role in promoting them for Olympics, the emoji, etc. So, of course, since it reinforced my own conclusions, I agreed.
I found the pattern thank you and I am going to try it soon as I can
@ muskaan: Thank you very much for the drawing. You already putted all the details on how to join in your version. I did the lock join and corethread join at the same point of course, so whenever you try the orange butterfly.
I will try it this afternoon / evening with the single pass, and using size 10, but just got another "help-mail" from the tatting group to solve another problem with a pattern. So testtatting all the time, how funny
@ Judy: You're right, I didn't think about using the picture with numbers. But now thinking about it, probably it would be too much on it, and maybe not so clear on how to tat when I see the graphic with explanation. But for sure a great idea for easier parts like doilies snowflake etc
@ tattingmargaret: Did you find the original pattern of the butterfly? Or just those from muskaan?
have fun with testtatting and let us know how it works and any improvement we can do
Thanks very much, @swissgirl & #muskaan! I have printed the diagrams off, and I'll try this out...
This pattern is in the catalog now - http://www.craftree.com/patterns/8013.
I've had one go at tatting this, but I'm not happy with the result. Let me give it another try, then I'll create a project...
