I love this! Don't have any size 20 pink but maybe that just means I should get some and get tatting! :D

What a great idea! Have you seen the wonderful spheres suspended in Singapore?

Those are stunning, Judith. Wouldn't it be cool if every local guild could create a similar installment for their geographic area?

@ninetta Thanks for sharing the link here. My guild got the information through Facebook and we're already planning our participation. The deadline will come faster than we think. I was working out the timeline to see if I could get it into our next newsletter early enough to be worthwhile, but March 1st means they will probably have to be in the mail by Feb. 1st, and the next newsletter is scheduled to come out in late January, so I've decided to make up a pass-out sheet and small "kits" with enough thread to make one or two and take them to our December meeting to pass out to whoever wishes to participate. I've already got the thread ordered!

My guild's first newsletter has been successfully launched and I have this coming week off from work. We had our 10th Anniversary party yesterday!!! Mordecai House in Raleigh very graciously hosted us. I took plenty of handouts I printed up for the Brussels' monument project, and quite a few of our members will be participating. I've decided to go through all the copyright free books I have and put together a collection of all the square motifs that I think will work out to the right size for the Brussels' monument project. Does anyone have any spare time to help with test tatting the patterns to see if they're suitable for this project? We can then share the files of those that will work so everyone has a variety of patterns to choose from to support this project, and we will then have a nice assortment of patterns we know will work together for other projects if we wish. I will attribute all the patterns so we will not lose track of what books they came from! Be aware that old patterns do not always have the best directions, and there may need to be some "interpreting" done. If one pattern frustrates you, just move to another. I'll keep volunteers posted as I find fodder for our shuttles and needles...

I'm also considering starting a contest to see who can create the most squares by Feb. 1st. I'm thinking the prize would be a collection of tatting books. I sometimes buy books from estate sales in big lots, and I end up with spares of many books. I usually pass these on to my guild's lending library, but thirds and fourths usually languish in a box waiting for me to decide what to do with them. I think a selection of them, along with a couple of choice rare books, would be a prize most people would find enticing. Any opinions on this?

@moraih Your energy level is staggering!

Here's a search that might be helpful - free tiled square patterns before 1964.

It seems to me the tricky bit is making squares the size specified.

Thanks for the link. I'll cross-reference with it. The size of the squares can be controlled somewhat by size of thread used. The pattern provided for the Brussels' Monument project is worked in size 20 thread. Two of our ladies brought samples independently to the meeting yesterday, and they came out identical in size.

This wasn't their first - Amsterdam over a canal and "land of the giants" in iceland (power transmission towers made up to look like stylized people) came before the urchin project. There's another in the works right now - The Flying Mosque. I worked on a minaret panel for it but we're not certain if it will make it to the display yet. UPS lost a 16 x 16 x 16 box filled with almost 30 lbs of braided nylon cording. How can you lose a 30lb box of white cord? Dunno. Gotta ask UPS. hahaha

(I'm trying to be humorous about it but I'm totally peeved at UPS for losing something I worked on for a month and am still recovering from - imagine 3mm cord crocheted with a 5.0mm hook - extremely tight work. I still don't have feeling back in my index fingers, but at least my finger prints returned.)

FlyingMosque.org is the upcoming project and it's being constructed by choishine.com

I'm hoping to get a few squares made for this. From what I understand, any shade of pink is acceptable as long as it's not variegated. It'll be an interesting lesson in tension because the squares are supposed to be a little over 1" x 1". I'm thinking of using it as an opportunity to try to needle tat a motif after I finish a few with a shuttle.

(edited to correct size - no cm > in conversion skills)

Huh, I hadn't noticed variegated thread isn't allowed. Where is that info? The requirements are getting harder and harder to meet. I was thinking using the pink #10 thread I already have and seeing if I could get to the same size with it, but sadly that won't work either then, because that's variegated thread.

It was my understanding that variegated was fine so long as it was pink. Beading was fine too, so long as it didn't interfere with the picots at the four corners to join all the squares. Where did you see "no variegated", @squeaky ? It wasn't in the FAQ I downloaded.

@Tim Ummm, why would anyone mind if you sent one? Everyone means everyone is invited. Why, do you Cro-tat or something?

Not even sure what that is. Not a lot of men tat. This is a women's cause. I agree with it. Just want to help. And I had to ask...

@Tim, That is what they shared in facebook:
"...
Let's tat a Brussels' monument in PINK !
Why ?

  1. To put tatting art in the spotlights
    during the World Lace Congress
that will take place in August 2018
    in Belgium

  2. To draw attention on women's rights
    What ?
Let’s tat 10000 pink squares together
    and show our world leaders
    and everyone
what people who don't know each other
can achieve with a common passion !
    Join us !

..."
No mention about only women allowed! Just people with tatting passion in common.

Is there a blueprint of what the Brussels Monument will look like, or how it will be displayed?

@Ninetta, Done. I know one more that will be made and sent also. Thanks for the link and the information. And yes, I have a passion for tatting. I wish I could retire so I could do more of it. I tat at work, the doctor's office, really just everywhere. I also just got another student. She is coming along fine. So, thanks again.

The friend who sent me the link told me no variegates, I think she got that impression because it has to be an all pink colorway.

Did anyone see anything about the color of beads? I was thinking about using clear, opalesque, or a shade of pink.

there were 2 different balls of pink in my stash!!

@Tim Okay, I'm an idiot. Thanks for the clue stick ((laughing)) Of course you can participate, Tim. And thank you. I don't think kindness and wishing the world were a fairer and less indifferent place is ever misplaced from anyone. Anyone gives you shit over tatting, send them my way. I looooove educating bullies and Neanderthals - in a kind and nonthreatening manner, of course.

Hugs,
Leigh

There are all pink variegated threads. I just received three balls of Lizbeth "Pink Parade" yesterday. I am going to use it. :)

On the pattern given, it is much easier to start on a ring than on the chain that she suggests.

@moraih, no, you're not an idiot. I never thought such. I do agree, easier to start on the ring. That's what I did. BTW, when are you coming to Tat Days. Not that far for you, you know.

Thanks, Ninetta. I do not use Facebook so I rely on others to let me know about things like this.
