That sounds wonderful! I'll download the new version and give it a try. Jane E is such a sweetheart. I hope someday to meet her in person. Thank you for letting us use your original pattern. You may wish to state your wishes explicitly how you wish it to be used somewhere on the pattern sheet since you're the copyright holder. :)

I met her in person when I was on holiday in England a few years ago, she is a sweetheart!

It’s a simple pattern, so long as no one sells the pattern itself, I’m happy for it to be used in any way.

I just came across this little square: https://www.craftree.com/patterns/545

It might be the right size, or it might be just a little big in Lizbeth Size 20...

@janemactats I've been working with your little square. My first try with it was closer to 3.5 cm, using #20 thread and a needle. I moved to a smaller needle for the next one. My single ring center came apart and I lost it, I worked the outer round anyway, and when it was finished, I used the needle to weave a thread through the center picots skipping around multiple times. The next one went a lot smoother. I put a dab of glue on the sensitive closing and it dried before I went on. Using your pattern makes my work look more tidy than the original pattern and I could tat while watching tv. The original required too much of my attention to allow "split-focus". So, at this point I have finished 5. The woven center allows me to pull it in somewhat and make it closer to 2 cm, the smaller needle didn't help much. I'll also try one with minimal picots. So, at this point I have finished 5.

Thanks, Grace! I'll do a test tat as soon as I can. :)

I'm up to 115 squares!

@GraceT I tried several on-line routes and kept encountering a page needing a password to get the pattern details.
I could look it up in the Weiss book, which I own, but tried only electronically linked info.

Oh good @Judy, I’m glad you’re making progress using my pattern. I also found the other one didn’t lend itself to tatting while watching tv. I had problems with the tension of the inner chains. I’ve tatted 35 squares so far, using the original, the Weldon and my pattern.

Hmm. I clicked on the direct link to the Clarks book in the Antique Pattern Library and straightaway the PDF loaded in my browser. I don't know why you ran into a password barrier.

hi all, do you think I cansend something with size 40 thread? In that case, there's anybody willing to test the pattern in the picture? alt-text

I also tried with a size 20 thread, not pink. In the pattern I substituted every 4ds with 3ds, every 8ds with 6ds, then the final motif it is 3cmx3cm alt-text

I think she wanted size 20 thread so that it would be stronger as the piece might get rather weighty being so large.

That looks great! I'll be happy to test tat it as well, if you like. We're getting a pretty good collection of patterns. Do you have a link to it?

I think @IdahoCanuck is correct. Even if she's sewing them to a backing, size 20 is going to hold up better than size 40. We should stick to what she's asked for as much as possible. :)

Decided to take a break from making squares and try to come up with a few more options, so I dived head first into the Trove archives for something from Norma Benporath. I'm still looking, just one more pattern, honest.

Anyway, I thought about maybe finding a suitable motif from Mary Konior. Then it occurred to me that there are many other tatters who are no longer with us that I'd like to represent.

That's when I realized if I was doing this, I probably wouldn't make it past Norma, That rabbit hole is deep and wide and I've been lost in it before, unable to tear myself away.

I'm gonna get the Norma square done then see if maybe I can continue. Unless there's someone else who has already thought of this and has started working from another end.

thoughts?

That's a really cool idea. We're going to have a fantastic collection of squares we know will work together size-wise - just make sure we're not violating copyrights. It either has to be copyright free or we need explicit permission to use the pattern for this project. I'm a big fan of Norma Benporath too. She and Myrtle M Hamilton did the same thing in the same century on totally different continents. Norma has the edge because she actually did produce a book to capstone her design career. Myrtle never did, and it is such a shame. She also has a huge body of work and hers are all tied up in difficult-to-find magazines. We'll never know which patterns in Workbasket were Myrtle's. Those records were lost when the building burned to the ground. I've always wondered what happened to all the doilies she designed after the pictures were taken.

I have 50 squares now, 20 of these have been tatted with size 40 thread and I hope the "raspberry frappe" Lizbeth is fine!

My alternative pattern is worked with two shuttles CTM. The finished motif should measure 3cm x 3cm, with a size 20 thread. I load all thread in shuttle2, unwind about 80cm and then put this tail in shuttle1, start the center ring with shuttle2, then do not reverse work and change shuttle, tatting the rest with the shuttle1 as the core shuttle. In the next short version text, R means ring and Ch means chain; FR means floating ring.

Short text:
Center: R 3-3-3-3
First round: mock picot, (Ch 3-3, lock join to center) repeat for 4 times
Second round: Ch 3-3-3, *[ R 3+3 (join R to first round), FR 3+6-3 (join to last picot in chain),
FR 3+6-6-3 (join to previous FR), FR 3+6-3 (join to previous FR), Ch 3+3-3] repeat for 4 times except that in the last chain the last picot must be a join to the first picot of the first chain.
