This is turning out very nice. I don't know if I'm ready to tackle such a large project yet, but I think I would like to try to make this some day.
I'll continue to update with pictures and notes. I'm working on piecing together a complete pattern, as the one I'm working from is made of confusion. I'm sharing all my notes for anyone who wants to tat along.
If you have the Sanders Tatting patterns book (green or pink) you can see that the teeny tiny dot-matrix printout is difficult to see at best and printed in the center across the fold. Some days I want to shake Miss Sanders, but then I remember it's a reprint. Ah well, the work continues! It's actually going a little faster than I thought it might, but I've been lazy of late and haven't worked on it as much as I should have.
It's not that I'm particularly talented, this is such an easy pattern, but I'm very determined. Doing it in a large thread (#10) helps, and for the pictures, having the ball and shuttle threads different helps too. I think anyone that wants to do this should just bite the bullet, go out and buy the thread and do it. Easy.
A quick supplement, the tiny cloverleaf, these are: R 2-2+2-2, R 2+2+2-2, R 2+2-2+2 and go in between the half circles and the two-row circles.
Nothing major. Will post the next picture as soon as I've finished the first "Oblong Motif."
Okay, I had to break from the book on this one after a test-tat of the oblong motif. I have completely rewritten it. The short chains are C 4, the long chains are C 5-5, the rings are the standard R 2-2-2-2 that have been used through the all the rest of the pattern. You'll notice, also, the finished cloverleafs. Those are, as I guessed, simply three of the rings from above.
And, yes, that's my actual kitchen floor. Installed in 1970-something, by my DH's oh-so-chic grandparents. I know you're jealous! :)
That floor pattern would have been up to the minute in the Art Nouveau period!
Thanks, PattyD, I usually don't take pics on it, because the black and white show up better on my back porch. I'm afraid the lines might throw off the pic, however, by the time I finish it, I might take a picture standing on my bar so that I can take a pic of the whole thing on my sexy 70's floor.
It's been a crazy couple of months, so I've not been able to keep up with my doily. On top of that, I lost my Boye of which I was so proud, but I have replaced it with a small army of ratcheting SB bobbin shuttles of which I am MORE proud. Anyway, so now my wrists are healed from my little accident at the amusement park, and I've finally snagged the time to finish up the last "Caterpillars."
I got a new computer, new phone and my new SBs in the same day, so far the only thing I'm using with any ease is the SBs. I mean, seriously, why didn't any of you tell me they were THAT GOOD! They are perfect for this piece and the #10 thread!
The next set is 5 circles of 12x(R 2-1-1-2, C2) joined along the caterpillars. I'm joining the first circle to the center of the caterpillar by two rings, and then skip one ring, and join the next by two rings, skip one, join the outside one by two rings, so that they are all positioned just right. Too easy for me to make a mistake on that one. I'll post again as soon as I've done the first set of them so that it's easier to SEE what I'm doing.
This tablecloth could be it's very own book with full pictures as I rewrite it with corrections. It's going to be a BIG pdf as is!

Looking good! and a lot of work! I hope you are able to progress smoothly with no more unfortunate mishaps :)
Loretta: Susan Bates Plastic Tatting shuttle. They are only a little bigger than my clovers and have a bobbin that rotates pretty easily but holds fast if you squeeze the shuttle. They hold LOTS of thread, and have a crochet hook rather than a pointy tip, but I was able to detat a few stitches withouth shredding the thread in the process. I'm loving them!
They were a bit hard to find, though. I got mine from Knitting Warehouse.
Thanks Idaho! I was most upset to sprain both wrists in one go, oh sure it made everything else hard, but the worst part was being unable to TAT. Now I've taken to tatting as I wait to pick up my son from school. I got a brand new purse that holds the project (so far) plus some extra thread, just in case. When it gets bigger, I'll get a bigger bag. :)
They are usually 1.99 at Joann.com.
If you like the SB you would love the new aerlits by Handy Hands when they come out or the LaCossette shuttles from Etsy.
Your work on this is progressing nicely. So glad your writs are better!
Thanks, xstchntat! Yes, all better and back to tatting. I can't wait until the aerlits come out, I've been on the edge of my seat for them, and I'll probably grab them up just as soon as I can! The hardest part is the translation of the work, but I'm sorta getting a feel for visualizing it and it seems to be going well. I'm keeping track of it, and I'm working on a PDF version of the complete pattern. I do hope that it helps others, and that eventually someone does it with me! (I'll be at this a while!)
Thanks, Lady, I had a lot of #10 in black but I din't want something so somber, so I decided to get some white to go with it so it can be more versatile.
Here's the latest pic, the small rings that attach to the caterpillars to form the first row of a quadrangle.
Wow! I am humbled and inspired by your vision and perseverance. Very impressive.
Well thank you! I'm writing the pattern down as I go, so if you want to catch up, I tat pretty slowly! The hardest part is translating it from the original mistake ridden version. Oh, I should probably mention at this point as well, I've found mistakes in the tatted one in the photograph. Major ones. How do I know they're mistakes? Because I'm sitting there with a magnefying glass and a toothpick counting the dots that MIGHT be rings and doing math and sketches, and comparing them to their bretheren. I might be insane. It's entirely possible.
Just dropping a quick note. I'm 5/8 of the way through the rings attached to the caterpillars. It's slow going, but I've found a great time to do my tatting, waiting in the line to pick up my son from school. There might be another delay as I debate making a snowflake or two for christmas. I'm also thinking that I may start making each arm out. Because these month separate posts are just silly.
I love seeing your progress. I really enjoy reading your updates.
Well, thank you! I keep hoping I can convince someone to join me in my insanity.
Okay, guys, I've finally, through very little free time, finished the first 40 circles that make up the Petals of the inner flower. I'm going to finish them in a slightly different method because I don't fancy inside joins. Anyway, here's the pic of the first row of petal circles finished. These are each 12x R 2-1-1-2, C 2, attached to the caterpillars. For those playing the home game, there are pictures of where the joins are further up in the thread. The next row is 12x R 2-2-2-2, C 3.
I have to say, as an aside, that learning the slip and slide method of tatting and the magic loop method of securing the ends have been SUCH a boon to this thing! I'm tatting faster and finishing neater than ever. Okay, my little surgeons knots aren't invisible, I probably lose points for that, but I want to be able to wash this thing, and I feel better having them there as not. (Get it? Knot? Not?)
The next section is indecipherable at present, so will probably require some test tats. This will, thankfully, be after I've finished the first petal. I've already started scribbling notes about it in my translation notebook.
