The caterpillars serve as a base for the petals. They won't be as noticeable once the petals are done. At least, they aren't in the picture in the book.

Thanks everyone for all the encouragement! It really drives me to keep going and finish it. I'm still debating what kind of fabric to do in the inserts on the outer section. Possibly a thin black, as a white might draw too much attention to itself.

For those of you who don't have the Dover reprint of the Sanders book (the version on google books does not include this pattern that I could find) here is the full spread from the book. I wasn't kidding when I said I looked at this with a magnifying glass and a toothpick to count rings. Those caterpillars were a pain in the neck.

The black arrow (made out of my black thread) is pointing to the fabric inserts, the white is approximately where I am, working on the petals of the inner flower.

You can hardly see the caterpillars, now, eh? (Kidding of course!)

It's really not that hard of a project, and it's been done in my spare time, just like any other project. And since it's constantly changing, I don't get bored with it. I'm considering making one after it based on my notes and patterns, probably in a brighter color scheme. I enjoy the challenge, and the product is just going to be fabulous. I'm also considering, instead of a round one, maybe making a rectangular doily of some medallion or motif for my mother. Several of my books have some very cool motifs, though I admit, I think I need more books. Even the library is coming up short!

I've estimated that it will be likely over a year before this is finished. The pattern says that it's comprised of 460 motifs, and I seem to be able to do one to two a day, but that's not counting something like the border of the central flower or the linen border, which I'm going to have an interesting time making. I look forward to the challenge!

Thanks Tracy. I originally did three versions of the Caterpillars in this pattern above before I settled on one that worked, and I always do one as I am working out the pattern to write it down, sadly, something the original author appears not to have done. I'm no stranger to swatching or practice runs in any craft, simply because I've been doing needle crafts heavily for twelve years. I've had a lot of foibles and some less than beautiful results, but I learned how to "waste" the thread in practice to save a whole project from being ruined. A perfect example of "A Stitch in Time Saves Nine!"

I expect there will be a couple more practice runs on this oval insertion coming up. The rest of the pieces have good close ups in the book so from the looks of the outer ring, I think these inserts between the petals might be the last major translation hurdle. The rest will be almost busy work to change to the modern notation.

So here's the latest, I've done two more rows of circles on the first of eight petals. I have two more rows to go, of which I've started the first circle. I've had a bit of a cold, so my concentration and my ability to tat have suffered (I lose most of my IQ when I get a sinus infection). But I'm chugging along. I expect once I get some more stuff done around the house that I should have a little bit more time to sit around and tat, as well.

Okay, I just got my Aerlits. I am enamoured of these shuttles! This is going to make tatting a DREAM!!! New pics posting soon.

Finally finished the first petal, and then on to the first insertion panel. I'm considering doing the insertion panel to either side of this first petal just to make the joins easier, mostly because I'm lazy and I still need to translate the patterns for it.

I promise that the next picture will be in focus, I didn't realize it was fuzzy until posting. Here's the final pattern for this section:

R1: 5 circles of 12x (R1-2-2-1, C2)
R2: 5 circles of 12x (R2-2-2-2, C3)
R3: 5 circles of 12x (R3-2-2-3, C3)
R4: 5 circles of 12x (R4-3-3-4, C4)
R5: 5 circles of 12x (R4-4-4-4, C4)

The top of this section is 18x (R2-2-2-2, C 4-4), R2-2-2-2. I'll get a better pic of the joins as I work on the petals.

This is such a dramatic piece and even more so in black and white.

Thanks! The next installment may come pretty quick as this insertion panel is working up quick enough. I do love the black and white, though I am wondering if I do another one what colors I would use. Maybe a nice blue or green. Maybe white for the rings next time! That being said, I have been working on this since april, and working everyday, it could easily be next year or early 2014 before I finish. I look forward to the challenge and I hope someone else joins me! Talk about an heirloom!

Wodentoad, you have my admiration for this project you are doing -- it is inspiring. It will be a wonderful heirloom. And I will cheer you on & I will encourage you. However, the largest project I can conceive of tackling these days is a doily of maybe 6-8 inches in diameter! So I'm not going to be tatting this along with you, but I will be tatting much smaller things and your project will inspire me to stick with my small efforts. You go!!!

emkay, no pressure. It would be fun for someone to join me, but no one has to. This project brings me joy, and that's the most important thing about something so "frivolous." If it doesn't bring you joy or you don't think it's something you would have the patience for, then why do it? It brings me joy.

For me, I kept seeing the pattern on the search for doilies to make, and I finally looked at it and realized that because of the small pieces, it could be done during waiting times, and as the mother of a kindergarten child, I do a LOT of waiting. I'm actually almost done with the next part!

Ugh... another hiccup. In this case, you can see the internal motifs for the insertion. Turns out the largest motif was wrong. This is what I get for being cocky. Good thing I hadn't gotten that far... urg! A week's effort lost!

So here you can see the motif I've done so far. Today's random household background is my bar countertop c. 1975. Remember before when I mentioned drunk monkeys writing the next parts? They neglected to mention that it was 15x PLUS the first repeat, 16 total. I'll save you counting, there are only 15 rings on that largest motif. Time to break out the scissors.

I think I'm going to take a break from it for a bit and work on decluttering my kitchen, then I'll pick it back up this weekend and see if I can figure out that bobble at the smaller end. I think it's a pair of 2-2-2-2 cloverleafs linked at the center by a ring or three. There's no explanation that's clearer than that.

Well drat about having to re-do that motif and drat about the pattern not being clear. Even so you are making great progress and this will be amazing when finished. Tat on!!
