There is good news, though. I was somewhat confused by the copyright info on this. It turns out, since the pattern is from 1915, and was printed in the Dover book with no corrections or re-writing, that means that I am in the legal clear to rewrite and distribute as I please. Hooray for the Public Domain!
Also, because I'm impatient, I'll start over on the fourth motif on the insertion panel today, probably after I do my dishes. :) Thanks for all the encouragement, everyone. I wouldn't have the will to carry on without you guys. I really am truly thankful for this wonderful community of amazing artists and careful crafters. The world needs more lace, don't you think?
You know, I just realized I have this in a book Ü Now I can follow along with the pattern as you go! I was also thinking that if "someone" was feeling a bit too intimidated by the size of the whole thing, the center portion of just the flower ( the petals you are working on) with their outer edging, would make a really nice larger doily..... Hmm maybe a future project.... Carry on....
I started thinking I was only going to do the center, but when I saw how much it needed re-writing, I decided to dive in and commit myself to the whole project. When it's done (possibly as late as 2015) I'm planing on doing another from my notes. Most of my delays have come from having to learn a few techniques along the way or rewriting part.
Feel free to tat along any time! I'm using #10 on this one (because I have it) but it would look very nice in a #20, and utterly mind boggling in something smaller. There's a little evil imp in my brain that would love to see it done in #80, but maybe not until my son is in college... he's five now.
HA! in #80 !?!?! You ARE insane! I was thinking #20 or maybe #40 at smallest.... and in colors..... hmmmm... but what colors?
and a few small beads at some of the joins......to enhance the flower look.....?
My sister suggested Brown and Rose, but I wonder if it might look a little 70s. To her credit, the 70s look good on her, and that was a subtle hint that she wants one. :)
" The world needs more lace, don't you think?"
YES!! the world DOES need more lace and it just kind of boggles my mind to be able to say that I'm a "lace maker."
I was thinking about doing it in some special order size 100 HDT that was a special order from LadyShuttleMaker to match my favorite shirt we got at Disney World on our Honeymoon 3 years ago. See the pic I sent her here. She matched the colors perfectly! I'm just afraid that 5 skeins to match the purple and 5 to match the green would not be enough. Yours is coming out beautiful!
How big are the skeins? I'm using LOTS of black, but the white chain thread, I only bought one big ball of the white, and I'll probably only buy one more. If you're only doing the flower on the inside, I would say it would probably be enough. How you end those I don't even know. The closest I've gotten to small thread was buying some special machine embroidery thread that is equal to about #30. Magic thread for that one might be sewing thread. I'm really loving the pattern now that the petals are forming and I get a better sense for what the whole will look like.
In other news, I've gotten back to work on the insertion panel, and after reading the same paragraph for the hundredth time, I figured out how to do the bottom part of the panel. I'll have pics to post probably later today or tomorrow. I still have to declutter my living room and put up my Christmas tree while my little one is away this weekend at Grandma's house.
Well, it took some frustrating turns, but I've gotten the first petal+insertion done. I'm going to do the next insertion panel so that the joins will be easier when I make my way back around.
I'll write down the pattern to this section in just a little bit.
GREAT! It looks really terrific!
You're doing great -- thank you so much for posting progress photos along the way. It is a delight to get peeks of how this table cloth is progressing. I realized this week that I have the Julia Sanders book with this pattern -- I'm using one of the small motifs to make a Christmas ornament.
emkay, That sounds great! Those small motifs for the outside are very pretty!
I made a slight error (now corrected) in the picture, as the insertion panel should have been connected on BOTH sides, to the rings. I had done them all first, before I realized that it would go faster if I just did one petal at a time. I say this so that I will remember when the next motif is finished.
Okay, So here's the full petal and insertion panel pattern:
Petal, attached to the Caterpillar, all joins as pictured:
R1 (make 5): Circles of 12x (R 2-1-1-2, C 2)
R2 (make 5): Circles of 12x (R 2-2-2-2, C 3)
R3 (make 5): Circles of 12x (R 3-2-2-3, C 3)
R4 (make 5): Circles of 12x (R 4-3-3-4, C 4)
R5 (make 5): Circles of 12x (R 4-4-4-4, C 4)
Over top, 18x (R 2-2-2-2, C 4-4), ending with a ring, for 19 total rings.
Insertion, Join motifs by 1 open picot on outside of each motif:
Motif 1: 4x (R 2-4-4-2, R 2-6-6-2).
Motif 2: 4x Cloverleafs (R 6-4-2, R 2+6-6-2, R 2+4-6, C 6) Join by open picots on the sides of the cloverleafs.
Motif 3: 4x Cloverleafs (R 8-6-2, R 2+8-8-2, R 2+6-8, C 8) As with second motif.
Motif 4: Center: 16 picots sep 1 ds, close. Outside: R 2-2+2-2, attatched to inner rings and at sides, Reverse work, R 4-4-4-4, attached at sides.
Around outside of motif, joins as pictured above:
At the top 6x 2-2-2-2 cloverleafs, C 4+4.
Along the sides, R 4-4-4-4, C 4-4.
At the bottom, after last larger ring, C 4-4, Cloverleaf 2-2-2-2, C 4+4, attached to previous chain. Cloverleaf 4-4-4-4, attached to next open chain, C 4-4, Cloverleaf 2-2-2-2, C 4+4, attached to previous chain.
I hope this is understandable. When I put the whole of the pattern together, I will include many MANY pictures. This will probably be a booklet when I'm done with it.
You have such determination. It's both a joy and a challenge to watch your progress.
Sorry about the long time to finish this one. Life happens, and I got involved in another non-tatting project that took over tatting time for a little bit. Then I got back to it, and I had a couple of miscounting incidents that set me back. It's fixed now, so here's the pic:
I've decided I'm going to finish the remaining six insertion panels first and place them first of these two sections in my pattern because tatting the circles in is slightly more sane to deal with than trying to make sure these are all the right way up which also took about an hour and a half of my tatting time. All in all, I'm saving myself insanity later. The next pieces should go together pretty fast, I hope, even though I might have to "check out" from my family over the holidays while I do some tatting. Not all bad. :)
Terrific! & worth the wait Ü I completely understand your thinking.... I would do it the same way.
One of the beautiful things about this pattern is both the needlework and the shape of the empty space between the stitching -- in this panel, I am particularly drawn to the four leaf clover shaped empty spaces between the rings...
Your perseverance is inspiring!
Emkay, that's one of the things that kept drawing me back to this pattern as well!
I've now started working up the center motifs for the six remaining insertions, which I will do all together. Without fiddling with them to get them onto the rings, they should whip up pretty quick. I'm very happy and inspired by all the encouragement here. I feel bad for both posting so much in progress and so far apart for these pieces. I expect it will be a year or maybe more before I find myself posting the final completed work. And then, because I'm not a well person, I'll be using my notes to make another one, maybe in a nice cool blue. By then, hopefully, I will have a complete pattern (read small book) to work from.
What an accomplishment! I am curious about the effect the color change will have on the overall appearance. Take your time. And, you can sign me up to buy a copy of your "book".
Thanks! I need to work on getting some good high-res pics with hubby's camera on a nice smooth, matte, non-white surface so that I can best show the detail and joins. I have half a mind for the more difficult parts to actually go in and make a visual tatting version showing joins that way.
In unrelated news, my husband and I finally broke down and bought a real actual kitchen table. We have been using a camp table for about three years, and before that, had no table at all for a couple years. Bonus: It's round, and a beautiful dark wood. Color me tickled pink!
Modelling on my new table, this week's work: I'm doing all six remaining insertion panels in one pass. Of course, they will be tatted on to the ring row that is already complete, but with a little quiet time after the end of the universe (the 21st) I should be able to finish at least the next set of motifs. The larger ring-only motifs will take a tad longer.
Once these are all tatted into place then it's a LOOOONG haul until the remaining petals, which are made up of rings, are done. Afterwards, I'll have the whole of the inner flower completed.
Sorry it's been so long since I've posted an update. Christmas was, as usual, a disaster, and it was very distracting from my art, on top of that, I had the cold from the underworld since Thanksgiving. I'm working on finishing the second of the inner motifs now, and I'm getting back into the flow of it. I'm hoping that it's not pushed back my timetable too much. I'm still planning a huge crafter party when I finish it.
