Patterns "Spring Doily 2016 - Serwetka Wiosna 2016" by Renata Niemczyk - "Renulek"
Craft typesTatting (Shuttle)
SizeLizbeth 40
made for WIP Wednesday, breaking the tedium, keeping it fresh
Project statuscompleted
Start date08 Jun 2016
Finish date25 Sep 2016

Decided to get this doily going to add some variation to my tatting
I'll try to make this my Craftree WIP Wednesday project for that reason.

Finished 25 Sep 2016
So obviously this didn't stay a Wednesday-only project. My shawl project went on a big hiatus while I worked the bulk of this project...
This Renulek pattern is very straightforward, no complicated techniques are needed. My biggest difficulty was to select the colours for each new row. That decision making slowed me down a lot. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. (But maybe a bit too much Ecru in Row 7 and 8...)
And now in typical 'it's about the journey, not the destination' fashion, I've no clue what to do with it. Once I have my own place it's for sure getting a spot though. Pre-emptive housewarming gift to me!

A little summary:

  • 51920 stitches
  • 43cm diameter
  • 3 months, 2 weeks, 4 days
  • 410m Lizbeth 40 --> 80m Ecru, 210m Leafy Greens, 120m Purple DK

For anybody interested in making this doily, I added a condensed version of the spreadsheet I used to my project pictures. This includes stitch counts and measurements for Lizbeth 40 thread.

For details on specific rows see below

Row 4
Completed June 10.
Reverse tatted outer chains (purple).
Started at a different point, at the 2nd ring in Renulek's element order. In my opinion that makes it easier to close the round.
The placement of the darkest colour in row 3 and 4 was inspired by IdahoCanuck's version of this doily. Quite the opening statement. I like it!

Row 5
Completed June 13.
Reverse tatted rings.
Only 15cm left of the ring thread, even though I had estimated it would be plenty! So lucky I made it! Was scared for a bit... XD

Row 8
Completed June 28.
Chains reverse tatted.
Intense ruffle!

Row 9
Completed July 6.
Rings reverse tatted, Used ball thread join for chains, to prevent the purple core to show at every join. Still very ruffly. Ruffel-y. Yes.

Row 11 - August 7
Since the whole doily is now available (17 rounds total) I calculated the stitch count for all rows and added them up. This will come in handy for ordering more thread, which will sadly be necessary. But it also made me realise, that with round 11 completed, I'm at less than 30% of this doily*! What?! The reality of circles, haha :D
*Correction, it's in fact 37%!

Last round!
Started on 16 September 2016.
Made 2 small changes to the pattern. Not affecting the look but more the structure. I do this with a tip I picked up somewhere (I suspect from Muskaan's blog) to add a small picot 1ds from the end of the first (2-clover) ring, and join it with the 2nd ds of the 2nd ring. This combines the rings into one sturdy element, and hardly shows, especially in this small thread.
In a similar way I've decided to join the base of the thrown ring to the chains on both sides. This prevents it from twisting around, since it's firmly held in the plane of the rest of the doily.

This round re-introduces some ruffle into the doily. The insides are curling or the outside is cupping, or both. It's not a lot, and I hope blocking will make it go away.
